Description

The project “How much longer until a B2” investigates the time needed to attain a targeted level in a foreign language, with a specific focus on organisations associated with the Swiss federal government. These organisations generally require their staff in middle and senior management to have at least B2-level skills in two official languages.

To begin, a comprehensive literature review of findings and experiences related to the time needed to attain a targeted language level will be compiled under consideration of the pedagogical instruments used. The focus is placed on the transition from A2 to B1, B1 to B2, and B2 to C1 in Switzerland’s official languages (Italian, French and German). In addition, an empirical investigation is conducted into the learning processes in individuals who would like to, or are required to, attain the prescribed level in one or more official languages. In the process, individual multilingual repertoires and other predictors proven to be related to efficient language acquisition are documented.

Purpose – Expected results

Using the methodologies of a comprehensive literature review and an empirical study, the project aims to create a solid scientific basis for promoting a better understanding of adult language learning in a professional setting. In the process, existing assumptions will be reviewed and factors influencing language acquisition identified, with particular attention given to individual variations in cognition, language biography and motivation. It is expected that the analysis of learning progressions and a more precise description of the learning time needed will deliver valuable insights for the development of personalised learning pathways. The findings, which will be made available in scholarly publications, will provide a data-driven basis for designing customised language learning modules and courses.
